(K.S.A. 65-118, 65-128, 65-6001 through 65-6007, K.A.R. 28-1-2, 28-1-18)Outfit worn by European plague doctors in the 17th century. The gear was meant to protect the doctors from getting the plague, mask the smells of the disease, and to communicate a plague outbreak in the afflicted neighborhood. The costume includes a waxed or leather cloak, a staff for communication and touching infected patients and articles, leather gloves and boots, a face mask with crystal or glass goggles, and a bronze “beak” filled with posies and spices. Often, the doctor also carried garlic in his mouth and incense in his nose and ears, and wore undergarments soaked in liquor, oil, and wax.
