Continuing Nursing Education Opportunities

Presentations, workshops, and video conferences are offered on a variety of public health-related topics. The Johnson County Health Department is an approved long-term provider of continuing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. See the Activities Calendar on the left for CNE opportunities. Dining with Diabetes
A four session program that combines cooking demonstrations and taste-testing with basic information on diabetes and nutrition. HbA1C testing offered for persons with diabetes on the first night. For more information, go to http://www.johnson.ksu.edu or call K-State Extension at (913) 715-7000.

 

Living Well with Chronic Diseases
The Kansans Optimizing Health Program (KOHP) is a six-week workshop conducted for 2.5 hours once a week in various community settings - it is known nationally as the Chronic Disease Self Management Program.  The program helps people with a variety of chronic diseases (arthritis, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and lung disease) learn the skills necessary to self-manage their disease.
The workshops are interactive and are facilitated by two trained leaders. Subjects covered include:

  1. techniques to deal with frustration, pain and fatigue
  2. how to exercise safely
  3. medications
  4. communication techniques for family and medical team members
  5. nutrition, and
  6. making informed treatment decisions.

Johnson County Health Department  and Johnson County Extension Office collaborate to offer this class.  Sign up is through the JoCo Extension office.  The Extension class is titled “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” under Family and Consumer Science.   Please click on the following link for information about the next class and registration: http://www.johnson.ksu.edu/classes

 

Healthy Living Project
Offers HIV rapid testing every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at 8650 W. 95th Street, Suite 3, Overland Park, KS 66212. Develops and coordinates online educational activities, events, and support groups for gay and bisexual men in collaboration with the Healthy Living Project. The Healthy Living Project is funded by a grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. HIV Rapid Testing
Provides HIV prevention counseling, testing, and referral services for people who are engaging in behaviors that cause them to be at risk for contracting HIV. To make an appointment for testing, contact Tabitha Wagoner, Human Sexuality Programs Coordinator, at (913) 477-8392.

Student Opportunities

We are always delighted to assist students. We require signed agreements with institutions to assist in students' public health educational experience. However, there is a limit to the number of students we can accomodate at any given time. Interviews with public health staff can possibly be arranged with students from schools without an agreement. Wellness Screenings offered include:

  • Cholesterol Screening (Lipid profile including HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose, cardiovascular ratio)
  • Diabetes Screening (Blood Glucose)
  • Flexibility
  • Bone density (heel scan)
