H1N1 Update as of 10/28/09

In October, the Johnson County Health Department confirmed that one additional resident of the county had died from H1N1 infection, bringing the current county total to two deaths.

H1N1 vaccine began arriving in Johnson County in early October, with the first doses of vaccine being nasal spray. This version of the vaccine is suitable for healthy individuals two to 49 years of age. It is not recommended for those individuals with underlying medical conditions or for pregnant women. We continue to receive allotments from the State and order additional supply every week. JCHD has also begun to receive small amounts of injectable vaccine to administer to priority groups.

Priority groups for vaccination are:
• Pregnant women
• People who live with or provide care for infants younger than age six months (parents, siblings, daycare providers)
• Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
• Children and young adults ages six months through 24 years
• People ages 25 to 64 years of age who have medical conditions that put them at increased risk for influenza-related complications

Johnson County has scheduled a priority group public clinic for Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Mission. Go to www.jocoflu.org or call the flu hotline (Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) at (913) 826-1263 for more information.

For now, JCHD recommends those in priority vaccination groups wishing to be vaccinated contact their physician and ask if they are an H1N1 vaccine provider. If they are not currently a provider, they can sign up at the following location: https://www.dhe.state.ks.us/surveys/private_provider_sign-up.htm.

As with any influenza virus, individuals are encouraged to take the following steps to reduce spread:
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or use an alcohol‐based hand sanitizer to get rid of most germs and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to co‐workers and friends.
• Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissue.
• Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting adequate rest and exercise.
