Johnson County Health Department - Childcare workshops

All classes will be held at: Johnson County Health Department, 11875 S. Sunset, Suite 300, Olathe, KS 66061, unless otherwise stated.

Fees for classes range from $15 to $20 per class. Please see class schedules. Prepayment is required to hold a spot when registering for all A/CCF JCHD workshops. Registration for classes will close one week prior to scheduled date of class. Prepaid registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. You may call to check availability if class is less than one week away. Prepayment is still required.

Workshop fees are non-refundable. Twenty-fours hours notification for not attending a workshop is required. Those giving 24 hours or more notice for not attending can be given credit to attend another workshop provided by the department. Those not meeting the 24-hour notice will forfeit any registration money paid.

Registrants who have already paid for a workshop that is cancelled by the department will be given credit to attend another workshop provided by the department. Workshops may be cancelled by the department with 24-hour notice due to lack of registrants.

Someone will contact you in one to two business days to confirm your registration and let you know the fees due for the class or classes you wish to attend. NOTE: Please be sure to check the calendar for updates close to your class date!

A class to assist new and experienced providers in preparing for a home visit. Tips for staying in compliance with regulations are provided. Offers an opportunity for the new and experienced providers to get acquainted! Approved for home providers and licensing surveyor/regulatory staff by KDHE for two clock hours of training..

3/25/2008, 9/23/2008: 6:30 - 8:30 PM	“STARS for Your Child Care Home” - Cost: $15. The first part of this class offers information on activities & materials to use with children, the design and arrangement of your home for child care. During the second part of this class, you will learn about a rating scale sometimes used to measure quality in a child care home and why “quality” is important. Approved for home providers and licensing surveyor/regulatory staff by KDHE for two clock hours of training.

7/29/2008, 10/7/2008: 6:30 - 8:30 PM	NEW! "Abusive Head Trauma" - Cost $15. Appropriate for any person who may provide care for young children. The who, what, when, and how to prevent this act of violence against children are discussed through group activities, discussion, and scenarios. 4/29/2008, 9/25/2008: 6:30 - 8:30 PM	NEW! "Every Child to Read" - Cost: $15. Children begin learning literacy skills right from birth. Current research has proven the critical role of parents and caregivers in helping to develop these skills. 4/7/2008, 7/8/2008, 10/1/2008: 6:30 - 8:30 PM	NEW! "Emergency Preparedness for Child Care Providers" - Cost: $10. This class will review information provided by the Johnson County Emergency Management and Homeland Security on three primary topics. The information you will receive relates to severe weather, preparedness plans and emergency kits and helping children cope with disasters. The presenter is Melissa Henrich, Risk Communicatior for the Johnson County Public Health Emergency Program. Approved by KDHE for 1.75 clock hours of training for home providers, centers, and surveyors.

4/8/2008: 6:30 -8:30 PM	NEW! "The Role of Meaningful Experiences in Supporting Early Language and Literacy" - Cost: $15. In this session, participants will discuss how meaningful experiences play a central role in infants and toddlers early language and literacy development. Participants will be able to discuss how the environmental may affects infants and toddlers, including environmental features to avoid and toys & materials. 1/9/2008, 3/12/2008, 5/7/2008, 7/9/2008, 9/10/2008, 11/12/2008 : 6:30 - 8:30 PM	“Signs and Symptoms of Illness” - Cost: $15. This class reviews the signs and symptoms of common diseases dealt with in child care, including an overview of measures to prevent the spread of disease. Approved by KDHE for two clock hours of training for center staff, infant/toddler, preschool, school age, center-based administration, home providers and licensing surveyor/regulatory staff.

1/22/2008, 10/28/2008 : 6:30 - 8:30 PM	“SIDS: Face Up to Wake Up!” - Cost: $15. This class reviews what SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is and isn’t. It also provides the most current information on SIDS research and update APA guidelines for SIDS risk reduction techniques, including environmental hazards, safe sleep practices and policies, and the need for a SIDS drill. Approved for both center staff and home providers.

4/10/2008, 10/9/2008: 9:00 - 11:00 AM	“Center Regulations” - Cost: $15. A review of the regulations for child care centers. Approved for center staff.

5/21/2008: 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	“The Hidden Dangers of Lead in Your Home ” - Cost: $15. Learn how to recognize lead hazards in your home and prevention measures against them. Approved for home providers and licensing surveyor/regulatory staff for two clock hours of training.

1/10/2008, 3/4/2008, 5/20/2008, 7/1/2008, 9/3/2008, 11/3/2008 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"First Aid" by Med-Act. Cost: $20. Training in basic first aid techniques. This class meets the requirement for first-aid training in the regulations for all childcare facilities. Approved for both center staff and home providers.

1/16/2008, 2/19/2008, 3/19/2008, 4/16/2008, 5/12/2008, 6/18/2008, 7/7/2008, 8/6/2008, 9/9/2008, 10/14/2008, 11/13/2008 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"CPR" by Med-Act. Cost: $22. Training in infant and child cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Approved for both center staff and home providers.

1/14/2008, 4/9/2008, 7/22/2008, 10/21/2008: 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Medication Administration " by Med-Act. Cost: $25. Participants in this class receive training in the safe handling, storing and giving of medications. This class has been approved by KDHE to meet the medication training requirement for the School Age program staff. Also approved for center staff and home providers.

7/23/2008, 9/4/2008 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Introduction to Room Arrangement" - Cost: $20. Since your children learn best through their interactions with objects, materials and people, the physical environment serves as the setting for learning. This course will show you how to create a developmentally appropriate room arrangement. Approved for 2 hours of training for center and home providers.

6/3/2008: 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Playground Safety" Cost: $15. This class will teach the participants about playground safety issues, i.e. fall zones, entrapment hazards, supervision principles, age-appropriate design, ground cover, etc. It will review a S.A.F.E. playground as defined by the National Program for Playground Safety. Approved for center staff, preschool, school age, center-based administration, home providers and licensing surveyor/regulatory staff by KDHE for two clock hours of training.

1/4/2008, 2/1/2008, 3/7/2008, 4/4/2008, 5/2/2008, 6/6/2008, 7/11/2008, 8/1/2008, 9/19/2008, 10/3/2008, 11/7/2008, 12/5/2008: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.	"Public Information Meeting to Apply for Daycare Home", Cost: $5 for licensed and $10 for registered. You do NOT need to pre-register for this meeting. You may not bring children with you to the meeting. The licensed portion of the meeting will conclude at 11:30 a.m. and the registered portion of the meeting is complete at 12:00 p.m. You will received a certificate for approved training. At this class, the group meets as a whole to compare and discuss the differences between licensure and registration, review of general regulations and a fire marshal discusses the general requirements for fire safety. The group then divides into two group in separate rooms to review the applications and requirements specifically to become a licensed or registered provider of child care.

Do you need to review your discipline techniques? Come to this informative training to learn a developmental approach to discipline that promotes positive guidance techniques that emphasize the adult's responsibility for guiding children. You will learn how to use modeling inductive reasoning and reinforcing desired behaviors. Approved for both center staff and home providers.

2/4/2008, 4/23/2008, 6/16/2008, 8/14/2008, 10/29/2008, 11/17/2008 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Setting the Stage...Creative Learning Centers" Cost: $20. Children learn through active exploration of their environment, therefore by "setting the stage" with developmentally appropriate learning centers, you create a role in which children explore opportunities within their environment. Come learn how to enhance your classroom. Approved for both center staff and home providers.

7/23/2008: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 1/7/2008, 3/26/2008, 5/13/2008, 7/28/2008, 9/16/2008, 11/4/2008 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Process vs. Product: Creative Art Ideas" Cost: $20. Young children's artwork reflects their own unique response to the world. Come to this informative training that will focus on the child's process of art rather than the final product. Come ready to dig in and have some fun! Approved for both center staff and home providers.

1/23/2008, 3/11/2008, 5/6/2008, 7/14/2008, 9/15/2008, 11/5/2008 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Asthma Management and the Environmental Control" Cost: $15 . This course is designed for anyone working with children who have asthma or allergies and those individuals whose job requires them to visit any child's home. The course creates an awareness of asthma as a disease and the positive health effects of initiating environmental control measures indoors where most children spend 90 percent of their time. The home is an integral part of the care of children with asthma (initially it includes doctor's offices and the hospital). The home, school, and daycare environments are all part of Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics' (CMH) approach to the treatment of asthma and allergies in children. The providers will be equipped with the knowledge to recognize early warning signs of an asthma episode and how to respond. They will also learn efforts to minimize environmental allergens and irritants. Approved by KDHE for two clock hours of training for home providers, CCC/SAP staff, CCC Infant Staff, CCC Preschool Staff, Center or home-based 24-hour care, child care regulatory staff and Program Director/Administrator.

1/8/2008 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM	"Emotional Development in Infants & Toddlers" Cost: $15. This training addresses healthy emotional development of children from birth to age three and the types of experiences necessary to nurture this growth. (KAACRA-sponsored for two professional development training hours). Approved by KDHE for two clock hours of training for homes and centers. 6/18/2008: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. 5/19/2008: 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.	"Let's Play Outdoors" Cost: $20. Outdoors allows children to become aware of important sensory aspects - to play without ridged direction. Come explore ways to add richness and imagination to your outdoor play experiences. Approved by KDHE for two clock hours of training for center staff and home providers.
