In general, national successes stem from improvements in the reduction of infant mortality, infectious disease, prevalence of smoking, cardiovascular deaths, motor vehicle deaths and violent crime. However, there are other measures in which success has eluded the population as a whole, including a rapid increase in the prevalence of obesity, a decline in high school graduation rates and an increase in the rate of uninsured population. The 2004 edition of America's Health: State Health Rankings represents the 15th comprehensive and comparative state-by-state analysis of health status. This year's report is based on a methodology and data sources reviewed by a panel of public health experts commissioned through the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. |
